Beyond the “About Me” Page: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Photographer

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. Just kidding, but if you want a good laugh this comic still makes me giggle over a decade later. It was created in 2004. Which, happens to be the first time I picked up a camera with the purpose of storytelling.

Storytelling has been ingrained in my photography since the beginning because when I first started it was tied to journalism. Finding photos that could stand on their own, in a series, or expand on the story was a hunt I enjoyed. Everything I loved about journalism: interviewing, getting to know people, finding out their personal story and why a subject matter means so much to them is what I’ll bring to the table when I photograph you.

I think it’s important to know my path to photography because then you get to know my why. And, because photography is very personal. You’re inviting me into your life, to meet your family, and share in your moments. So, why do I do it? Essentially, I find peoples’ stories fascinating. I want to hear them and tell them by creating images that show how beautiful they are. Having that photojournalism background gives me the perfect launching pad.

So, that’s the serious stuff. Here’s five random things about me.

  1. I play episodes of Spongebob on my iPad in order to help me sleep. I’ve been doing it for years. I’ve watched the episodes so many times I don’t need to “watch” them to know what’s going on. Before you judge, Spongebob came out when I was in the 8th grade. I’m now in my early 30s. I’ve had a long time to watch those episodes.
  2. Dogs are life.
  3. I am am an avid hiker and probably a beginner level backpacker. Sometimes I let my husband talk me into even more adventurous things like canyoneering in Utah. A 100ft free rappel is on my top five scariest things I’ve ever done list.
  4. I’ve been trying to teach myself to sew for about three years because I have grand ideas of historical ballgowns, clothes that actually fit me, and cute quilts all over my house … Yeah …
  5. I am always willing to try something new. Life can sometimes feel monotonous and exploring new places, things and ideas helps to spice it up!

So, now you know me (sort of). At least a little bit better. And, I’d love to get to know you.
